What you should pay attention to when buying a gas cooker

A camping stove should suit your meals, luggage and intended setting. Check these six points before buying, and compare the complete kit including cookware and the correct gas canister.

1. What do you want to cook outdoors?

Will you mainly heat water, make coffee and prepare a small meal, or do you need several pots at once? Start with the number of people and the pot capacity you need. Then check whether the stove and cookware are intended for that use.

2. Which features do you need?

Look beyond the wattage. Consider flame adjustment, ignition and compatible cookware. A power rating alone will not tell you whether a set suits your meals and luggage. When comparing boiling times, look for clearly stated test conditions.

3. How much space is available?

For a cycling trip, account for the whole kit: stove, pots, cutlery and fuel. A larger cooking setup may be more practical at a campsite. Check what is actually included and which parts can be packed together.

4. Which gas canister is specified?

Check the instructions for the connection and approved fuel. Do not choose a canister by size or fill weight alone. Check whether it is included and whether you can obtain the correct type before your trip. Ask before buying if the specifications are unclear.

5. What are the conditions for use?

Read the manual before buying. It should explain where and how the stove may be used. Check safety features for the specific model; do not assume that every stove shuts off automatically if it tips over or overheats.

An additional windscreen is not suitable for every canister stove. Follow the relevant manual. For example, MSR warns that enclosing a gas canister in a windscreen can cause dangerous overheating. MSR guidance on windscreens.

6. Are instructions, spare parts and support available?

Check whether you can access the manual and who can answer questions about accessories or replacement parts. A clear list of included items and an accessible support contact help you resolve questions before buying.

Example: the Willi camping stove set

According to its product documentation, the Willi camping stove set includes a 1,800-watt burner with piezo ignition, a 0.75-litre pot and a 0.25-litre pot. The described kit also includes a pot lid, pot support, canister stand, camping cutlery and a transport mesh bag. The gas canister is not included.

Willi is intended for outdoor use. Its instructions require a level, firm, non-combustible surface and prohibit use in enclosed spaces such as tents, cars and motorhomes. They also prohibit covering the stove with windscreens or other objects. Read the complete Willi instruction manual before use.
